THE POWER OF FRESH TURMERIC FOR PAIN PREVENTION
Tumeric Lattes, Tumeric Curries, Tumeric Tea….. <3
As a fitness maniac, I have discovered increasing turmeric in my food as my go to pain medicine for fighting muscular inflammation. There is a noticeable change in muscle soreness when I take it every day. When I miss a few days and lose the consistency of it, my body just doesn’t operate the same. I also used to suffer with chronic chest infections and the flu. After experimenting with tumeric in my diet, I found myself getting sick less and less. Now, I can’t even tell you the last time I was ill.
Turmeric Nutrients
Turmeric root contains curcumin, an extract from the root of the curcuma plant. This extract has long been used in Chinese and Indian medicine for its anti-inflammatory, anti-carcinogenic, and antioxidant properties.
In fact, it’s so powerful that it has been proven to match the effectiveness of some anti-inflammatory drugs, without side effects.
Inflammation good or bad?
To implement this lifestyle change, I had to understand why inflammation is incredibly important in our bodies.
Not only does it help our body’s to fight foreign invaders, it also has a specific role in repairing damage, cleansing the liver and reducing allergic reactions.
Without inflammation, pathogens like bacteria that we are exposed to every day could easily take over our body’s and kill us. Uncontrolled forms of inflammation occur in the body such as diseases, cancer and respiratory problems.
Whats the daily dose?
According to the healthline.com the daily dose for anti-inflammatory effects is 500 to 1,000 milligrams of curcuminoids per day. However, due to turmeric’s slow absorption into the blood stream, it is suggested to add black pepper to the dosage. Following the reasearch provided, it is suggested (9Trusted Source, 12, 13Trusted Source):
For osteoarthritis: 500 mg of turmeric extract twice daily for 2–3 months.
For high cholesterol: 700 mg of turmeric extract twice daily for 3 months.
For itchy skin: 500 mg of turmeric three times daily for 2 months.
Who Should Not Take It?
Be mindful, that like any spice or food taken in large doses can cause some side effects. For me, I just simply cut off an inch of turmeric root and consume it almost daily in tea form. Please discuss with your doctor if you have the conditions below…
These conditions warrant extreme caution:
Pregnancy and breastfeeding: There is not enough research to determine if turmeric supplements are safe for pregnant or breastfeeding women.
Gallbladder disease: Turmeric may cause the gallbladder to contract, worsening symptoms (21Trusted Source).
Kidney stones: It’s high in oxalate, which can bind with calcium and cause kidney stones formation (22Trusted Source).
Bleeding disorders: It may slow the ability of your blood to clot, which can worsen bleeding problems (23Trusted Source).
Diabetes: It may cause blood sugar levels to drop too low (24Trusted Source).
Iron-deficiency: It may interfere with iron absorption (25Trusted Source).
SUMMARY Turmeric supplements are unsafe if you are pregnant, breastfeeding or have certain conditions. Supplements can also interact with blood thinners and diabetes medications. However, fresh turmeric seems to be safe when used as a spice in food.
My go to -
Turmeric Tea paste
TURMERIC TEA
- 1/3 cup / 80 ml good, raw honey
- 2 x 1/2 teaspoons dried turmeric
- a wedge of lemon
- 2tsp of freshly ground black pepper
INSTRUCTIONS
1. Make the Turmeric Paste
Work the turmeric into the honey until it forms a paste (I use a pestle and mortar). You can keep this on hand, in a jar, for whenever you'd like a cup.
2. Brew the Tea
For each cup of tea, place a heaping teaspoon of the turmeric paste in the bottom of a mug. Pour hot (but not boiling water) into the mug, and stir well to dissolve the turmeric paste. Add a big squeeze of juice from a lemon, and a good amount of black pepper. Enjoy! Stir now and then as you drink so all the good stuff doesn't settle to the bottom, or top off with more hot water as you drink it.
